'so... I was at a party last night' installation by andrea cuius and roland ellis for poet sabrina mahfouz's solo show at the new wimbledon theatre

light and sound shift in response to one another in 'so... I was at a party last night', a light installation
created by london-based programmer andrea cuius and designer roland ellis for poet sabrina mahfouz's solo show 'dry ice'.

thirty tungsten lamps, of a variety of forms and each with an intricately shaped filament, are suspended from the ceiling,
creating a luminous canopy. the brightness of each lamp is determined in realtime by a computer program fed data
from an onstage microphone, and the lights brighten and dim in response to the changing frequencies and amplitudes
of sound from the performance.

the artists state:
'conversations and interactions form the stimulus for this reactive light installation. each point of light has a character,
and together they form a dynamic canopy [...], a luminous ceiling, such that the stories might be told from beneath the sheets
or within an alcove.

'field' for the men's spring/summer 2012 collection by OMA / AMO at the prada fondazione, milan
© OMA; image by agostino osio

italian fashion house, prada's men's spring/summer 2012 collection presentation transpired within a runway framework designed
by OMA/AMO. an ordered grid of 600 blue foam blocks arranged in a 1.5m by 1.5m grid permeated
the prada fashion show space in milan. the blocks intended for audience seating also doubled as edges for the varied catwalk paths,
inevitably integrating individuals into the show. models filtered between the seats in highly choreographed catwalk patterns,
turning along the grid in divergent directions.

the rhythmic rows of seating situated within the confines of the vast historic building creates an unexpectedly sculptural effect.
artificial grass contrasts against the blue blocks, evoking imagery of an outdoor picnic. the building's rustic and monochromatic
concrete walls amplify the saturation of the colorful installation. sixteen parabolic aluminized reflector light panels located around
the perimeter of the grid provide lighting for the runway.

(text via designfulx)

    Solar Sinter Project

Markus Kayser - Solar Sinter Project from Markus Kayser on Vimeo.

Solar Sinter

In a world increasingly concerned with questions of energy production and raw material shortages, this project explores the potential of desert manufacturing, where energy and material occur in abundance.
In this experiment sunlight and sand are used as raw energy and material to produce glass objects using a 3D printing process, that combines natural energy and material with high-tech production technology.

Solar-sintering aims to raise questions about the future of manufacturing and trigger dreams of the full utilisation of the production potential of the world’s most efficient energy resource - the sun. Whilst not providing definitive answers this experiment aims to provide a point of departure for fresh thinking.

    Sun Cutter Project

Markus Kayser - Sun Cutter Project from Markus Kayser on Vimeo.

    ....and so on

The sun cutter project explores the potential of harnessing sunlight directly to produce objects. the machine is a low-tech, low energy version of a laser cutter. it uses pure sunlight, focused by a ball lens, to repeatedly cut programmed shapes in up to 0.4mm thick plywood as well as paper and card.
The project also explores the merit of analogue mechanized production that draws on the machine technology found in pre-digital machinery and automaton. it uses a cam system, moving an x & y- board to control the shape of the cut. the cams are set into synchronized motion by a small solar-powered motor driving a timing belt.
Each pair of sunglasses made, even though very similar in shape, is still unique, creating a juxtaposition between the machine-made, repetitive and individual, unique object.

    3D Printing

"Our next spaceship will have two bathrooms."

The biggest strain on Han Solo and Chewbacca's relationship must've been sharing the bathroom in the Millenium Falcon. Imagine Han cleaning out the drain and unpeeling the bar soap after Chewbacca took a shower. And Wookiees probably take forever to dry off, soiling towel after towel while Han waits outside with his toothbrush.

    0hairwars02.jpg

Maybe Chewie could speed up the drying process with this hair dryer shaped like Darth Vader's mouthpiece, designed by St.-Petersburg-based ID'er Tembolat Gugkaev.

No word on whether it makes that heavy breathing sound when you use it. Hopefully it doesn't, or Han will get the wrong idea about why Chewie's taking so long in the bathroom.

Tools have evolved since the beginning of time. What started as a primary element to assist the human body has evolved as the human mind keeps finding ways to make them more efficient, aesthetically pleasing and generally cheaper for us to consume. With every improvement comes change but for the most part, we have seen change in tools as a gradual process due to the fact that adopting change is not easy for consumers. This does not mean that we cannot think ahead and visualize how tools would look and interact in the future, it just means that both trajectories (visionary and evolutionary) need to inform each other as both strive to improve tools and our quality of life through the use of those tools.

Gregory Kaufman or Gerg as he prefers it, is a young designer from Houston with an interesting vision. A recent bfa graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute, Gerg chose to redesign a tool for music as his final Senior project, the DJ table. As a DJ himself, he saw an opportunity to make a change that would drastically influence DJing by not only thinking about the tool but also the logistics of owning and transporting the equipment. He found the process of DJing cumbersome and inefficient as DJs must go through an arduous process of preparing and transporting the equipment. Heavy, bulky, expensive and tedious are the tasks of set up and tear down. There is also the risk of dropping and damaging the equipment as you move back and forth between venues. Gerg saw an opportunity to consolidate these obstacles by developing and designing a digital DJ turntable.

He studied not only the logistics of purchasing and transporting, but also the facets of tactile behaviors that come with DJing. Gerg worked arduously considering the physical and emotional connection the DJ must have with equipment and audience. He developed a digital interface on a flat screen that will allow DJs to have more control and a more fluid process with their passion. Understanding the difficulty of not having the dimensional and tactile qualities of the turntables, Gerg designed a series of gestural interactions to compensate for not having dimensional parts. This clever solution allows the DJ to maintain his/her current integration with the music and the audience.

Enough said, take a look at Gerg explaining the concept and demonstrating the product through a conceptual video. Go ahead and give us your opinion in UX, interaction and gestural considerations.

These amazing sculture captured my eyes and I found a new form-genre of art, Hyperrealism

In painting and sculpture, the word "Hyperrealism" describes a photorealistic rendering of people, landscapes, and scenes.

Hyperrealism is a genre of painting and sculpture resembling a high-resolution photograph. Hyperrealism is a fully fledged school of art and can be considered an advancement of Photorealism by the methods used to create the resulting paintings or sculptures. The term is primarily applied to an independent art movement and art style in the United States and Europe that has developed since the early 2000s.

    Another works by
Ron Mueck, an Austrailan hyperrealist sculptor.

Muecks’s works are detailed down to the last mole, the last wrinkle, and the last stubble of hair. The technical skill required to produce such intricate sculptures is mind-boggling.  But even from a photo, one can tell, the power of his sculptures lay not only in the detail or scale, but in the emotions his characters convey – vulnerability, loneliness, boredom – the emotions of every day life.
Mueck has had a number of solo and group exhibitions around the world. In 1999 he was appointed to a two year post as Associate Artist at the National Gallery, London. In 2002 his sculpture Pregnant Woman was purchased by the National Gallery of Australia for AU$800,000.

I thought this might be tribute to Milan Kundera's book or something but obviously not?
I love the title and the concept, and the way it exhibits itself, surrounded by bees,
it feels like this is more than just one sculptural object, but definately touching my heart.

From the homepage of dutch designer Tomáš Libertiny

    creater's introduction

The Unbearable Lightness (2010) is a large sculptural object whose central figure is covered by a  skin of  natural honeycomb that was made by a swarm of 40.000 bees. The figure is fixed in a glass box reinforced with aluminum frames and suspended on industrial chains and heavy duty rigging system.

This new work is a continuation of the earlier work The Honeycomb Vase (2006). The  premise was to work with beeswax, a seemingly very fragile and vulnarable material. Libertiny opted to find a story in the  inconspicuous. The inspiration was taken from Dostoyevskij's Brothers Karamazov. There the main character Aloysha is seemigly a non-hero material throughout the whole book. He is however the most enduring character and closest to whom we are or what we would be in the book.

The natural beeswax is a by-product of life of a honeybee and comes in the form of a honeycomb cell. Libertiny found a way how to manipulate honeybees into building their home in a very concrete shape and control the process. His interest lies in alternation of a natural process in a way that is not natural thus creating tension between expectation and experience.

The Unbearable Lightness is a metaphor for manipulation and control. It is a result of the combination of technology and nature. The bees as an inteligent and social mass are lured and manipulated into participating in building a Christ-like figure which represents a myth. The bees are doing what they do every day and what they do the best. The bees are designed by nature to do this repetitive job. Conceptually, there is a major influence of Albert Camus and his work entitled "The Myth of Sisyphus" whom he calles a "tragic hero". He knows his destiny but "decides" to go on even if it means no escape. The Unbearable Lightness is a dialectic formulation on fate and free will. It is a bitter sweet sypmhony.

In the relation to Libertiny's other works, this is an extentesion of the idea and tradition of mimesis. However, Libertiny is more interested in immitation of a natural process (or a natural phenomena) itself rather then its representation. He also rather aims for something that nature alone would never do. So there is a tension between natural and industrial, freedom and control.

    The things one finds wandering in a landscape: familiar things and utterly unknown, like a flower one has never seen before, or, as Columbus discovered, an inexplicable continent;
and then, behind a hill, as if knitted by giant grandmothers, lies this vast rabbit, to make you feel as small as a daisy.
    The toilet-paper-pink creature lies on its back: a rabbit-mountain like Gulliver in Lilliput. Happy you feel as you climb up along its ears, almost falling into its cavernous mouth, to the belly-summit and look out over the pink woolen landscape of the rabbits body, a country dropped from the sky;
ears and limbs sneaking into the distance; from its side flowing heart, liver and intestines.
Happily in love you step down the decaying corpse, through the wound, now small like a maggot, over woolen kidney and bowel.
Happy you leave like the larva that gets its wings from an innocent carcass at the roadside.
Such is the happiness which made this rabbit.
i love the rabbit the rabbit loves me.

After almost 5 years of knitting the rabbit found its final place in the italian alps (close to Cuneo). It waits there to be visited by you. You might even take your time or check back every now and then as the rabbit will wait for you 20 years from now on.

    ThreeASFOUR

    threeASFOUR is an
avant garde fashion label that was originally established in 1998 as ASFOUR. Since 2005 the New York City based label consists of three designers, Gabi Asfour, Angela Donhauser, and Adi Gil, who were originally a part of the designer group ASFOUR, Featuring the three designers, as well as designer Kai Khune. Khune later left the group to pursue his own label. The experimental designs produced by threeASFOUR have been purchased and displayed by several museums.

threeASFOUR is known as much for its bohemian personal past as it is for curving layers and intricately ethereal silhouettes, along with the famed circle bags that surfaced on Sex and the City. In 1998, the label—then called AsFour—was started by aspiring downtown designers Kai Kühne, Gabriel (Gabi) Asfour, Adi Gil, and Angela (Ange) Donhauser, who come from Germany, Lebanon, Israel and Tajikistan, respectively. Despite the wacky expressionism from the label’s founding members and the theatrical infighting that led to Kühne’s departure in 2005, the label has acquired clout and credibility in the mainstream. Highlights include a CFDA fund nomination in 2007, which put the team on par with Vogue darlings Phillip Lim and Erin Fetherston and gained them a T-shirt collaboration with the Gap (of all the CFDA nominees, their collection reportedly sold out first). Their avant-garde sensibility, which includes slashed wrap jackets and asymmetrical organza dresses, have also gained attention from prestigious museums like Victoria & Albert and the Met, who have acquired pieces for exhibitions. In 2008, the label branched out from the conceptual ready-to-wear it shows in New York to a swimwear collection.
